Hey Guys I got this little issue on my 04 V8 AWD Mountaineer.
When I am accelerating it has the tendency to "double shift" with a little clunk to it. Hard to explain.......Also- at times when I am coasting to a stop you can feel and hear a clunk when it shifts into 1st. Also- I have this weird grind pop noise when I make sharp turns into say a parking space.
So, I took it to my friendly ford dealer and they performed the following:
TRANS CLUNKS INTO GEAR WHEN ACCEL
CAUSE:
052303A PERFORM TSB 05-23-3 RE-PLACE RING&PINION
AND DIAG
252 WFRD
062205D REPLACE REAR AXLE SEALS
252WFRD
1 5L3Z*4209*C GEAR AND PINION ASY – DRIVING
2 7L1Z*4A109*D KIT – SHAFT REPAIR
1 XL*3* ADDITIVE – OIL – FRICTION MODI
1 TA*29*SEALANT – SILICONE
3 XY*75W140*QL OIL – REAR AXLE

This TSB doesnt even address my symptoms and they said they weren't able to reproduce my issues but this should cover them.

I was thinking it was valve body related......Thoughts??

Thanks!
John

clunking into 1st gear?

What would the correct term be for the clunking into 1st gear?
That's what mine would also do.

I would say it is valve body related.....also get your dealer to check for an ecm update for your tranny

tranny???

I am having a similar problem. Mine is an 05 and makes a clunking sound when I am slowing down. I thought it was the tranny. When I first got the truck it had 19900 miles on it. No one heard this noise as it would only do it when I was driving. For 3 months this went on, finally it did it with 3 other people in the truck with me, sounding like the tranny fell out. I have taken my truck to the dealer 9 times in 7 months to no avail. At first it was they told me in a joking way that it was a "woman driver thing". It did do a very small version of this clunking but the tech said it was releasing pressure. This is my 3rd explorer and neither of the other ones did it. The techs cannot "hear" or "feel" this noise and it never did it when they were in there with me. I finally just gave up on trying to get them to find it. The noise is still there. It doesn't do this everytime I stop but about 60-70% of the time. Now there is 45000 miles on it. Any suggestions?

Transmission issue?

Hi, I just joined the forum to see if anyone had this problem also ( I also have a leaky sunroof). But anyway, when I stop with my '06 4-wheel drive V8 Explorer I just bought, it's not that it makes a noise but if feels like someone hits me from the back or it feels like one of those hammers that have some loose lead inside; there's like a delayed reaction.
I've heard that the dealer needs to reprogram the transmission??? Does that sound right?
Any advice would be appreciated.

When I first took mine in they adjusted the belts in the transmission (?) and it stopped for about a week but then started back. I am guessing this is a tranny issue because I feel the jolt, clunk, or whatever it is under the middle front of my truck. I asked if it could be either the 4wd or the advance track system but was told no. Like I said in my first post, after about 9 trips to the dealership and no solution I just gave up and live with it.

im having this problem too.. Mainly the delay and surge in reverse. But on occasion i hear a small clunk when decellerating. Auto tranny... its back at the dealer right now. Anyone resolve these issues yet? Oh and...

what the frick is an ECM???

Can't help with the OP's problem (sorry!), but I can offer some information from other people.

Allez: your problem is a common one in the 4th gens and needs a computer reprogram (PCM and tranny computer)

Drexxull: ECM = PCM - Powertrain Control Module. It's the engine's computer.
