I'm having problems with my transmission receiving a P1700 code. The dealer wants 90$ to run the computer on it...is it worth it, or will it just come back with a vague code such as the P1700..or can they dig a bit deeper into the issue?
IMO it's worth it. My scanner isn't that great, but they can usually diagnose it correctly with their much better diagnostic tools. I will rarely give the dealers a recommendation, and I avoid them whenever possible, but sometimes it pays to let them handle a problem. I'm not saying run right down there. Maybe someone else will chime in on your code and have the fix for it, but if not, at least $90 is the going rate for a diagnosis.
See my response on your other thread... I would personally just let a good transmission shop look at it since they typically do the work on the transmissions for the dealerships.
You are correct in assuming a $90 dealer scan won't provide any more detail than what you already know. But a P1700 is usually just for low or contaminated fluid. For any shop to check for that would be additional labor cost.
