In most cars, when running the defroster, the A/C will come on automatically. At the very least, you can turn it on manually. But, in my 2007 Explorer, the A/C will not come on at all when running defroster. The A/C runs fine normally, but when switched to defroster, it cuts off. Pushing the A/C button does no good. Obviously, this makes defrosting difficult, if not impossible.

Any ideas? Thanks

When on defroster the light will not come on and pushing the button will do nothing. Have you opened the hood with the defroster setting on and checked if the compressor is turning?

I've not yet popped the hood to check on compressor, but just figured that since the condensation was not evaporating off the windshield after a long time of defrost, that it was not working.

The A/C only blows air thru the panel vents when the button is depressed (on) Putting the selector switch to Defrost, over rides the A/C and shuts it down. (at least it does on my 2007 XLT)

That stinks. It's an essential thing in most every car I've seen and helps with the condensation buildup. Never heard of that.

a/c can only come on with pannel and floor .... you cant defrost anything with a/c and if you want to defog then turn the dial to the blue cold setting it will pretty much do the same thing but no heat

Defrost triggers the A/C in my 06
Even if I put it on defrost/floor split

Same thing on my '07 Limited with the automatic HVAC...when I push the defrost/floor button, the a/c automatically comes on.

Mine is the Non automatic HVAC. Just dials. Like I stated before AC only works in the floor/vent positions.
turning the dial to defrost automatically shuts off the AC. This is how the vehicle was designed. There is nothing wrong.

I can say for certain that my 06 XLT w/manual temp control, the A/C automatically turns on (not light) with both defrost and dfrost/feet setting. Any other setting I need the button to turn on A/C which also turn on light. Turning back to defrost or defrost/feet may turn off the A/C light, but the A/C is still on.

this is correct. the manual says
² (Floor and defrost)-Distributes outside air through the

windshield defroster ducts and the floor ducts. Heating and air

conditioning capabilities are provided in this mode. For added

customer comfort, when the temperature control knob is anywhere in

between the full hot and full cold positions, the air distributed through

the floor ducts will be slightly warmer than the air sent to the

windshield defrost ducts. If the temperature is about 6°C (43°F) or

higher, the air conditioner will automatically dehumidify the air to

reduce fogging.

defroster ducts. It can be used to clear ice or fog from the windshield.

will automatically dehumidify the air to reduce fogging.

The AC and compressor come on automatically whenever you turn on the defrost function, the light does not come on but AC is on and can't be turned off.
