I nee to know the locations of the kick down control and the transmission pcm for a 1996 explorer xlt with a 4r55e. Diagrams of pics would be best.

Electric shift control

I'm not familiar with the 4R55E but I think it is very similar to the 5R55E which utilizes electric solenoids to control gear selection. Also, there is no dedicated transmission controller. PCM stands for Powertrain Control Module - one unit that controls both the engine and the transmission. Based on sensors (MAF, throttle, temperature, etc.) the PCM calculates the engine load and selects the appropriate gear.

I saw your other thread briefly describing your transmission shift problem. If the line pressure is low and the engine speed increases significantly between shifts then that is a symptom of a leaking valve body gasket. I disagree with your mechanic friend who said it is uncommon. Ford issued a technical service bulletin describing the problem and its solution. If you search on "2-3 shift flare" or something similar you should find dozens of threads describing similar problems. My particular problem was a 3-4 shift flare which worsened as the transmission warmed up. Upgrading the valve body IAW the TSB solved my problem: 5R55E shift saga

okay that was helpful. but IAW and TSB? what is that? not good with anagrams. is this problem as "simple" as replacing a valve body..not a whole trans?

bonded separator plate

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin
IAW = in accordance with

The gaskets between the separator plate and the valve body get blown out after years of service. Also, the bracket that holds one of the shift solenoids breaks. Basically, you drain the ATF, remove the filter, remove the valve body and separator plate, replace the separator plate with one that has bonded gaskets, replace the solenoid bracket, perform some minor changes to the valve body, then reinstall everything with new filter. It all can be done with the transmission in the vehicle. You may want to read the TSB: TSB 03-22-10 You'll need to purchase the appropriate kit for your transmission from Ford.
