SOmeone told me there was an option for a bigger alternator on the 93 and 94. I have over 1600 watts of power going to my amps and after replacing a battery cable there is no dimming until I turn it up to about 45. (HU goes to 60). We have the tow package, so did it come with a bigger alternator? Thanks

i would bet not,

i do believe that the only 91-94 limiteds were blessed with 130 amp alternators.

i could be wrong but i am pretty sure only limiteds got them

Anyone else? I'd like to know if the Limited Alts were 130 amps... if so, I'll chuck the stocker back in, and throw the 175 amper on my 91 sploder with the 5.0

What would have been the purpose of a stock 130a alternator? My house only has a 150a circuit panel! I could understand it if you have a 1600watt system (130a=1560watts) or a serious winch, or possibly an inverter running a small amusement park. But what was the purpose of one off the showroom floor?

The purpose is to run all accessories. Our 95 amp alternators barely get by when the lights are on, the heaters on, the defroster, etc. Mine dim when those are on and I'm idling and my voltage regulator checked out fine. I think the limiteds have 130 amps to run foglights, the overhead console, and the upgraded stereo.

dim lights

Does anyone know why the lights on a 91 would be constantly dimming? (all lights, int, etc) The bat gauge while running always moves slightly up and down and all the lights slightly dim and go bright all the time..??? The alternator was replaced at one time and it did this before and after.. Any ideas?

I thought the limited edition explorer did not come out untill 93:rolleyes:

It's cool that some of them have a 130 amp alternator, but I think it's overkill. My '88 Bronco II has like a 35 amp alternator and everything runs just great, and yes it's an XLT with all the options.

could be the alternator is going bad again. it could be the voltage regulator. or it could br that you are running too many accessories at the same time, and it's too much for the alternator.

Have you replaced the battery cables? That solved it for me.

haven't tried the cables yet.. It did it right before the alt. went bad and still did it afterward too.. It's never seemed to cause any problems other than being annoying at least.

Replace the cables. It will make a world of difference. The OE ones are more than 8 years old. They may look alright on the outside, but inside they are full of corrosion.
