Hello members,

My 05 Explorer V-8 sound like a diesel engine at idle and driving up to highway speeds. I know everyone else has this, but I have a appointment with my local Ford dealer this Wendsday.

I recall seeing a post in the forums about a internal document which states the noise is normal and no repair is needed. Any idea where I can see the thread that has this? Tried searching but seems my search keywords are not good enough.

Thanks,

Before you go to the Ford dealer, I would bring it to a reputable independent shop and see what they say.

sounds me like a case of bad timing chain tensioners or the guides broke, that will usually make it sound like a diesel on cold start

It could also be running lean and the diesel sound you hear is detonation. That would only really happen under a load though. Hope it's not the chains.

Tech does that apply to the 16 valve engine or just the 24 valve?

3 valve & 4 valve it seems.

OP did you make the appointment with the dealer? I was wondering what the outcome was. I have read some other threads and I believe Morbid is correct. I have 137K on the V8 and it needs the timing components serviced I am fairly certain.

Because it seems like every Romeo engine has failure of the timing components, my own here will rattle a bit upon startup if it hasn't been driven for a few days. I'm going to start rounding up some parts and a gasket kit.

Its worth going to the dealer in my opinion. A dealer will push for maintenance and other extras but its your right to say no and just request diagnostic. I have a 05 v8 as well. Its a 2v 4.6l it has no cam phasers that didnt come out till 2006. Timing chain rattle could be the case the easiest way of checking that is pulling off the rocker covers and checking for chain slack. These things are also known for torque converter rattle as well.

It seems the gasket behind the hydraulic tensioner blows out, and causes problems when it leaks down.
