Obviously the ecoboost has forced induction, but as far as internals go.. how different are they? I picked up a 2014 N/A 3.5L and was thinking about going with a single bigger turbo. But I can't find anything on something this new. As far as the driveline the car is awd

I was thinking the same also, does anyone know if the transmission is much different? I was thinking of a single remote mount turbo at the back of the vehicle

Thank you! Happy I could find a forum, I had initially looked and couldn't find anything, google is weird sometimes.

The transmission is different. The Sport uses the 6F55. Biggest transmission in a NA explorer is the 6F50. Not as much torque carrying capacity with fewer clutches. I am sure there are also chages to cv joints, halfshafts, rear diff, etc... The list would get pretty extensive. All this is overcomeable--all it takes is money!

I think the ones with towing package have the 6F55, mine has factory towing. I don't want to check every single part if it comes down to it... yes I have a bad habit of messing with whatever the factory has done:(. I was pretty sure the axles, diff etc are built the same but haven't checked. Maybe I can search around the net and see if the rods and pistons hold up to a few PSI :D

There are some me online Ford parts dealer sites you might try comparison.

Ford ETIS will show you which transmission you have. I have the tow package and it shows 6F55. I checked the VIN of the 2011 Limited that I had previously as well as the 2014 MKT and they show 6F50. Both w/o tow.

I believe there is a bit of difference, internally, between the two engine types. the Ecoboost has a lower compression ratio than the N/A. Whether or not the rods and pistons are different, I can't say. Having an N/A myself, I also have a Livernois tune. I find this combination to be more than adequate for power. Never thought to myself, "gee, this thing seems so under powered". This, from a person that traded in a '13 Mustang GT/CS w/ 5.0L and also a tune. For as small as the engine is in the EX and for as much as it weighs, I'm quite impressed the way things are. Maybe I'm easily satisfied...or something.

Livernois? I know if it isn't suited for a turbo then I at least want to get a tune done, factory stuff never compares to a vehicle specific dyno tune. I came from the subaru world so we just had cobb and opensource, is Livernois the big one over here?

I had figured drivetrain would be different, to me thats a little easier to approach when it comes to breaking and fixing, I'll have to look and see what trans I have, ford ETIS? you said?

Yes, Livernois seems to be the most popular if you check out the threads on 'Tuning'. If you don't have the factory tow package your transmission is more than likely the 6F50. With the package 6F55.

Does anyone know how much hp someone can push out of an n/a? I can't find anything on what the internals are rated for because I have 2 td04 turbos kicking around that I was contemplating on using if I dont have to do internal motor work. I just cant find any specs for the 3.5 na motors. It's all for the ecoboost and I'm not sure if they share the same internals across platforms
