Well guys I decided once I get my 96 V8 AWD up to par I'm throwing 4.10 axles in it, so want to do some research to be prepared and know what I'm looking for. Does anyone know what axles will work? I know 95-96 had front CAD axles so I probably don't want to mess with them. So from 97-01 should work for the front correct? 2 or 4 door? I believe even 01-03 sports were ok too right?

Far as the rear other than no traction bar mounts were all 95-01 rears the same 2 and 4 door? Then 01-03 sports also should be the same? Did they all have the right hookups for abs/speed sensors and such? Then I think sport tracs had them too but I forget what years.

Anyway I'm probably being confusing, so I'm hoping someone knows what axles will swap in properly without any modification. I know I will lose the traction bars but from my research they really don't do much and were kind of a crappy design anyway.

No one? I figured this would have been a quick answer.

4:10s are most plentiful in the two door with the sohc , although they are open diff, sport tracs have drum rears , I would look for the newest sport you can find and swap the LS carrier from you current rear with fresh clutches

Not all sports were open I don't think. I could swear I've seen sports with the D2 axle code which should be the 4.10 LSD no?

4:10s with LS do exist but they are not very common

So you just want to swap axles and roll the dice on the condition of the bearings in it?

You certainly could, but these axles aren't getting any younger. Most of what you're going to find in a junkyard are going to have 200k miles or so.

Just a thought.

Here in south Florida it's right at $500 per axle to re-gear including parts and labor.

And that's with all new bearings and clutches for the LSD too.

That's not bad for the peace of mind that comes along with knowing that you're good to go for 100,000+ miles.

By the time you buy a used axle and wrestle it out and in and replace a few parts, just how much are you going to save, REALLY?

Well the axles in my truck now have 150k on them and I don't have any carrier bearing issues. So if I just do axles seals and wheel bearings, I figure id be good to go as long as I find some axles with 150k or less. Do people really have issues with bearings going bad on the carriers?

Being that these axles will come off a 4x4 they should have less wear than my awd truck no?
