I have a 2005 explorer v6. I recently had back end work done, new wheel bearings and cv axles replaced on both sides. I have it done by a real shop. I also replaced everything in the front end myself. Since then I have had sporadic clunking and bad vibrations in steering wheel.

I went and got new tires and an alignment. It made it better and I took a trip out f town for the holiday. The vibration got worse when I made it into town so I stopped by Firestone.

On the right rear cv axle where it meets the differential, it isn't sitting tight, you can move the axle where it meets the differential. There are metal shavings as well in the area, and differential fluid is slowly leaking at this area.

Firestone said it needs a new rear differential installed, but they don't do that work and sent me on my way. It will be about a week before I head home. I've called some transmission/specialty shops but they are all closed for Labor Day.

Does this sound like a complete replacement or rebuild of the rear differential? Or just the gears? Bearings? Besides the occasional thud and steering vibrations, I'm not getting any other whining or whirling noise.

Will get the car to a shop that deals with differentials tomorrow. In the mean time, does anyone have any thoughts on this?
