- '98 4.0 OHV 5spd
First off, I just want to say hi to everyone here as this is my first post! Its good to see there are other people out there as obsessed with their explorer as I am.
I have a 98 Explorer 4.0 OHV 5spd with 100k on it. I am experiencing a loud noise when i start off in first gear which seems to be coming from the clutch/tranny. The best way i can describe the noise is that it sounds like a fog horn or some kind of animal mating call. I normally only hear it in first, however occasionally i will get it in second if i am going slow enough (it seems that the more torque there is the more noise there is). I am also having difficulty getting the transmission into second and third gears. Occasionally it will go right in but other times i will have to knock it back and forth a few times to get it in (potentially a problem when im trying to switch gears in teh middle of an intersection). Also, occasionally i get a terrible grinding noise from the tranny when going into second (and only second) even if i have the clutch fully depressed (the first few times i just thought it was my driving...but no). I started driving the car when it had about 80k on it and it already had these problems, so i cant say for sure how long they have been going on. Im fearing having to replace the clutch/transmission work. What do you guys think?
