I don't know if this is the answer you're looking for, but the following is information I gleaned off the 'net. I can't remember where, so I apologize to the person who wrote it for not giving proper credit. However it did help me learn more about DIS when I first got my Explorer.

"The Explorer's DIS fires off two pulses for every ignition of Air fuel mixture. I think they did this to cut the number of coils in half. Anyway the coil fires a positive charge down one wire and a negative charge down the other. This means that one spark plug will fire backwards. If you have a single platinum plug 3 of the plugs will wear out in the time that a non platinum plug would. The computer can't really deal with the engine having different combustion properties in each cylinder. This leads to terrible idle and poor performance.

BTW the DIS kills the plug wires too. Plan on replacing them every 60K miles at least."

In other words the spark plug works twice as hard to ignite properly.

Is this what you mean?

one of the reasons that the dis systems fire two pluges at once is it improves power and cut down on emstions(it burns the fuel that would normal be mist)

Does this mean replacing the wires and plugs in my truck with Split Fire dual core wires and Bosch 4+ Platinums will actually decrease performance?

I have been troubleshooting a Chevy DIS system and discovered an ignition system I have never seen before. The ignition system I am troubleshooting uses a waste-spark system. I have never heard of a spark plug firing in reverse every time. Learning about this led me to wonder about the DIS ignition system on my 98 Explorer. Can anyone tell me if the DIS system on the 4L SOHC uses a waste-spark system or does Ford do it differently? Needless to say, a reverse firing sparking plug would seem to be a weaker spark than its forward firing pair.
