A long time back there was some info on this. something about remove the radio and find the yellow wire that controls the auto 4x4. can anyone help me or point me in the right direction. I have been searching but can't find it. I think someone even had a diagram drawn up about this. thanks much.

To make this more clear what I am trying to do. The 4x4 in auto mode means the front wheels are always on until a certain speed then they shut off. There used to be info on here to disable this. People used to debate that is saves gas, wear and tear on the 4x4, etc. I can't find the info on it anymore. I am not sure what wire you need to put on a toggle switch to get true 2wd when you don't want the 4x4 on at all.

I found it. here is the link

still not sure what wire.

Don't use the yellow wire. Use the big brown one under the seat. Its later on in that thread where someone found it.

Yeah search for brown wire mod. you don't want the yellow one

You can use the brown wire anywhere 'downstream' of the splice between the brown wire from the TCS solenoid and the TOD relay. That splice is in the upper left hand corner of the radio opening behind the GEM module. Anywhere between there and the transfer case is fine to splice the switch.

I may be wrong but I thought that "AUTO" ment that the front would engage when the rear speed sensor was diffrent fron the front speed sensor. Indicating that the rear wheels are slipping and to turn on the front.

Indeed, it's an automatic 4wd system. It's rear wheel drive until the rear wheels slip, then it engages 4wd momentarily until both front and rear drive axles are rotating the same speed. There is no speed at which the 4wd will not activate if needed.

is there a mod for a 99 xlt 4 door to get rid of auto all i can ginned is for 2002-2005

You won't save on wear and tear because the driveline will be spinning regardless.

its called the brown wire mod or BWM, i think there is a sticky called Comprehensive Brown Wire Mod or something like that. i did this a while ago, very simple, you just put the wire on a toggle switch so u can use 4wd when u need it. the wire i used was in the big wire harness behind radio near the ecm IIRC. but from what i am told you CANT be doing burnouts, spinning in the snow, etc. i was told it will burn the clutches up in the transfer case. correct me if im wrong, i belive thast what i was told when i asked about it. this mod is good for having the 4wd kick-in unneccecarily during summer when roads are wet and you turn a corner, etc. witch was my reason of doing it.
