Specifically I have a 2002 Explorer with V-8 4x4 and tow package. I think it is a 5R55W transmission if I am not mistaken. Does this transmission have a filter? Or does it have just a screen? Basically, I'm trying to figure out if a regular transmission service should have the filter changed. I called the local Ford dealer and was told this transmission doesn't have a filter per se but rather an screen that does not need to be changed. Personally, this wouldn't be the first time they didn't know what they are talking about.

What throws me off there is the ad says 2002-2008. I was thinking the 2003 and newer use a different transmission and thus possibly a different filter.

I had my trans. serviced at an independent service shop and they dropped the pan and replaced this screen/filter. They let me watch from the big window in the lobby. They even cut the old filter apart to look for debris and it was one large screen.

I hope this helps. I have a '03 V8 with the 5 speed auto.
