Do I need to improve the stock suspension of the newest model?

I did a search first, but nothing showed up.

I'm thinking of buying a '02 Explorer Sport (4WD, 5MT) for my wife.

However, I have read some reviews on car mags. (i.e. Edmunds.com), pointing out that the handling of the new model flat out sucks.

Do you agree about that?

I don't usually like to modify my cars, since I try to get the one that best fits my needs and then leave it stock. Nonetheless, the Explorer Sport is the SUV that appears to best fit my wife's needs, so I would be happy to upgrade its suspension if I conclude it's necessary.

What are your 2 cents? The Explorer will be mostly used on road, but some mild off road (moderately steep climbs, up and down hill) will be performed every once in a while.

I don't expect the Explorer to handle like a sedan, but to reasonably cope with its power while cornering, without holding my breath because it will roll over at moderate speeds.

When I lowered my '99 bu 1 3/4" it made all the difference in handeling on the road.

I only leave the paved road for a dirt road on my ranch.

Indeed, lowering it will help in handling. However, I'd rather don't that, because the Explorer Sport is already a low clearance SUV and lowering it would hurt it's somewhat limited off road capabilities.

Does anyone thinks the new model needs stiffer shock absorbers and/or springs, so it would handle a bit safer in corners, while being comfortable as a daily driver? If you do, what brands do yo recommend?

Rolo; if you do not want to change ride height at all and you only plan on off-roading it a little (you can always change your mind later ) Depending on budget constraints and availablity in Venezuela.... You may want to look at getting some adjustable shocks or even just stiffer shocks.... And/or you can look into stiffer/thicker anti-sway bars. The sway bars are available from several sources and most users have great luck with them (do a search on this site for write-ups/opinions). If you would consider raising it a bit; I would highly recommend the Torsion Twist (TT) and Shackles. They were highly recommended to me from this site and I love the results! The TT will definately lower the front lean while cornering. Good luck.
