Do timing chains get louder as they go through the dying process?

Mine currently makes a click but its not really loud.

My death rattle hasn't gotten louder and I've been driving on it for a few thousand miles. Are you sure the click isn't something else its a pretty distinctive rattle

Thats what the ppl at the garage said, & the motor has about 220,000 miles on it. It's kind of a clicking/ticking sound. Of course they said it could be the pulleys & everything else related to the timing chain or both.

Apparently there is no way of checking to see if any of them or the chain are bad without taking everything apart.

Take your serpentine belt off and start the engine but for a very short time because you wont have coolant flowing. If the sound goes away check all your pulleys. If the sound is still present than it could be the timing chain. To double check get a stethoscope and put it by the Jack shaft chain (front of block behind the water pump) front of the driver side head and the rear of the passenger head. Those are all the places were the chains run. Hope that helps let me know if you have any other questions too

I was certain my chains were rattling, replaced rear tensioner, fitted OOM12 kit, still made the noise. Took my serpentine belt off and ran the engine, it was so quiet its unreal! Turns out my belt tensioner was stuffed, replaced it yesterday and the engine is PERFECT! Sounds so quiet and smooth!
