Can someone explain the Drive by Wire technology which I hear became standard in 2004 Explorers. Does is simply replace the metal cable attached to the throttle body? What are its advantages and disadvantages?
The name pretty much explains itself. "Drive by Wire" pretty much means drive by wire. It means there is not necessarily a cable from the gas pedal that rotates the valve in the throttle body. It is now calculated by the vehicles ECU and the valve is moved via a electronic actuator.
The disadvantage is that it is not computer controlled so if and sensor or anything fails you are out of luck. My fathers F-150 FX4 has this and i feel like the trottle response it a little slower than my ex.
Advantages is that all of the traction control and all is monitored and controlleed by the ecu so it can react faster and more efficiently. Also the efficiency of the engine is more efficient.
