Hello everyone.... I have a 97 Explorer XLT and recently had my drivers side wiper quit working. I took the arm off and the shaft that stick out has a plastic nut holding it in place. I removed the plastic nut and that shaft seems to not be connected to anything if I would have let go of the shaft it would have fell down inside so I put the plastic nut back on. I have never repaired anything like this but if explained what to do I can do it. Im not sure but on the firewall below the shaft it appears there is a panel and im not sure its for that. Any ideas?

Thanks
Chad

yes, the wiper linkage will drop into the cowl after the plastic nut is removed. It sounds like the clip that holds it onto the motor may have come off, or broke. Either way, the wiper motor will have to be removed to check that.Access to that part of the vehicle is not great.

How do I access/remove the motor to fix this? I see there is a panel on the firewall in the area where the arm/shaft would be is this a panel I need to remove? Also do you know of any diagrams of what it should look like so I can go by an image or page of a repair manual? Thanks for the reply....

You would have to remove the wiper motor by removing the 3 bolts mounting it to the firewall. It should pull away enough to see where the arms attach. there should be a clip holding the 2 arms onto the link that is bolted to the wiper motor.

The wiper motor is mounted in the upper left hole in the picture.(you should be able to see the 3 bolt holes)That is all the room you will have to work with. Your brake booster will be down and to the right of it as you are facing it.As I said, access is not great.

Thanks a million, The picture was just what I needed!!!!!!
