my wifes 99 xlt has issues i need to resolve cause she is driving me nuckin futs.the 4x4 lights blink 6 times at startup and at 2min intervals thereafter.yet there have been no codes set.if it were a sensor problem shouldnt there be a code set?maybe i am pilling codes from the wrong spot could codes be set to another computer other than obdII?
the next problem is upon left hand turns only there is a loud metallic squeal from the drivers rear wheel. ive pulled the wheels and inspected the brakes and rotor they are in fine shape. i suspected the brakes because when making the turn and holding the brake i didnt detect the noise

Just to clarify, the car isn't really the issue - its your wife that is driving you nuts? :D I can't really help with that. :p

Anyway, the flashing 4wd lights means that there is a code set in the GEM (generic electronic module) which is the computer that engages the 4wd system and also controls the windows, door locks and a bunch of other stuff. You need a scanner that will read GEM codes - a generic OBD2 scanner won't.

On the noise from the rear, check to make sure that the calipers are sliding on the caliper pins - if not, you will get uneven wear of the rear pads. Double check to make sure that its not the wear indicator that is touching the rotor. On my truck, this would make noise going around corners when the pads were getting thin.

Did you check the parking brake shoes inside the rear rotors? These have a tendency to self destruct over time, especially when they aren't used regularly.

I had the same problem on my 98 AWD. There were two magnetic sensors mounted on the transfer case. They are the front and rear driveshaft speed sensors. One is mounted kind of above/behind the shift motor. The other is mounted to the right a little. Both have wires running to the shift motor. I cleaned both by removing them (one 10mm bolt) and wiping them off. This stopped the problem. I eventually replaced the front driveshaft speed sensor and placed fresh synthetic tranny fluid in the t-case. I may have the ford part numbers somewhere if you need them.
