have you tried the throttle on the engine and listen to it there?

Hi Pete
Try cleaning the idle speed control valve and engine breather valve.
Make sure all the vacuum lines are attatched.
Kev.

it seems to be related to the drive side i can rev the engine from under the bonnet and everyhing sounds sweet. It is as the ex is coasting all is good but as you touch the gas it is there. The kids sit in the back and they think they can feel it under there feet

I think i will have to wait and see if there is a meet somewhere with other ex owners and let someone have a listen .

Sounds like it could be a propshaft thats wearing possibly?
What about the gearbox and transfer case?
Are the oil levels ok?

Hi kevin would any of these faults be heard when the car is just idle and revved without driving thanks pete

gearbox fluid is full have not tried transfer box will try that tommorrow night.

Gearbox, transfer case and propshaft noises will only be heard whilst driving i think mate. First step I would do is get underneath and check for anything obviously loose/worn.

cheers mate what is the best way to test for a worn prop pete

Just grab hold of the shaft and try and twist it back and forth to see if there is any play.
Is it definatly a mechanical noise. Could it be something like a blowing exhaust?

have tried the exhaust had a blowing joint but had that welded .I think your lines of thought are the next things to try starting with the prop and transfer case thanks for your help .

Is dronoing rpm related

Is droning there all the time when you step on the gas or does it come in at particular rev range or go away at a higher rev ?

the sound is not as bad at low speeds more so at 30mph upwards thanks peter

Check the revs at which it occurs. Is it in the range of 2300-2500 rpm regardless of gear. Does it disappear after 3000 rpm? Change down in gear to check whether it is irrelevant to road speed and only related to revs. I have the same problem and have tried to eliminate all causes except the possibility that it is the first symptom of the dreaded timing chain problem, although I have no other symptoms there is reference on forums which relates to this rev range. I certainly describe it as a droning which does not affect driveability, only increases noise levels somewhere forward of the driver's side floor with a mild feel through the floor, but unable to tell if it central. It is not at the wheel and not level with or behind the driver

that sounds about the same place will take it out the weekend and try all differernt gears and speeds. Will let you know what speeds etc.Nice to know i am not on my own thanks pete :)

hi exploerman some one did recommend to get all four wheels off the ground and drive as normal with all wheels off the ground, then, wait for this bit ,get underneath and try and find the noise. That does not sound like fun to me and depends how much you want to find the noise

iv done that to figure out my droning noise, abit of a scary moment to find my front left prop bearings is going, dont drive it mad off the stands lol

your a very brave person, but did it work.Need to get to about 30mph what do reckon ?
