hello all

after 3 months of hell with my 2000,enough is enough i'm getting a new 02 explorer.

it has been one problem after another. serious vibration at 70 to 80 mph [no one ever drives in this range], vibrating engine at idle, 2 months for timing chain tensioner deluxe fix kit to come in. creaking driver seat, creaking driver door hinge.

i did actually reach a living breathing person at ford, i THOUGHT he would or could help me. NOT. engineers came in to look at and dive this "rare" vibrating explorer. after driving several times and taking readings on the [extreme] vibration level, the verdict was they're all this way. bull-durham they're all this way!! this was my second and i know they don't all vibrate.

OFFICIALLY these don't have quality concerns according to ford. the tech's know they have problems, the service people know they have problems, it seems everyone but FORD knows this.

quality is job 1, actually it seems like "nailing america in the keyster"is job 1.

i feel better now. thanks for the vent.

back to life now, i just traded this beauty [it really is a nice "looking"truck] for a brand new [at least i have some rights now] 2002 explorer 4wd,4dr SPORT pack. it is red with leather,moonroof,6 disc, towing package. it had to be brought in, i'll pick it up friday.

i am stoked, but a bit paranoid after my recent experience.

anybody had both of these generations?

what if the 2002 vibrates like the one you just got rid of? Creaking drivers seat? That usally has to do with the person sitting in it, my creaks but I am 260 pounds and I expect it. The Best of luck with your new explorer and I am sad to hear about the one you needed to get rid of.

I want to get your opinion on the 2002 cuz I was looking at replaicing my 91 with a 2002 or newer when the time comes with just about exactly what you purchased.

Keep me posted of how it goes.

Brian

vibration

I also have vibration in my exhaust system and two ford dealerships all tell me its normal, that thier all this way.
Im getting rid of this xlt as soon as possible and into a 2002 xlt. Too bad cause the one im in now is a great looking xlt, im just fearful of the next expensive problem FORD is going to tell me I just have to live with.

You guys all like the new 2002 XLT explorer body? Its just too weird for me... I cant see one being hooked up... I like the old bodies and the 2001 sport bodies too much.

Unless the vibration is really bad, it seems that all explorers do that. Yeah and the creaking just comes from cheap tolerances when the seats are built. I think they all do that.
Although the engine thing is pretty crappy though. I would hate to have to worry every day about whether my engine is gonna die and never start again.
The 2002 Sport Trac might have mild highway vibrations but I beleive the engine troubles should have been taken care of by 2002.

My '99 Sport vibrates a lot at like 70-80mph too...I think this is actually pretty common...

road enforcer- i weigh 175 lbs,so hopefully i didn't cause the seat creaking. if my new truck vibrates at highway speed i will be sick.
i fully intend to check this vehicle out before i endorse the check over. in my state you have far more rights reguarding a vehicle if you purchase it new.

myexpwork- i will definetly post my thoughts and impressions after a couple of days behind the wheel.

i do off-road a fair amount, i hope the ground clearance is sufficient. that is one reason for the 17" wheels that come with the sport pack, also the limited slip axle with the towing pack should help.

jhnny- i agree the looks of the previous gen are great- it sucks that for some of us that it's only skin deep.

jason_25, team xplo my '98 shook nothing like my '00, otherwise i would probably think they were all like that.
the bugs should have been worked out by 2000.

does anyone know what type of headlight bulb the '02's take ? i am going to take the silverstars out of this lemon, it doesn't deserve them

thanks for you replies

peter

It doesn't take the same kinda as what your '00 has. You got 17" wheels? Are you sure? I thought all the '02's came standard with 16" ones.

Jason he said he got the Sport Pack. for is 02 explorer

jason25

the 4 door sport package is a late option.

basically i have tube type runnung boards and 17" wheels and tires, a leather wrapped steering wheel. WHICH SHOULD COME ON ANY W LEATHER INT, BUT DOESN'T.

also i get 5 of the aluminum wheels, instead of 4.

the '02 explorer takes 9006 low beamers and 9005 for high beams. that's about $100.00 outlay for silverstars.

i will want them

Got any photos of the 17" wheels? I'm curious as to what they look like.

95explorerxlt

i'm out of town until 7.5.02

if you go by any [almost] ford dealership the sport packed 4 door x-trucks are now out there.

i believe they sit a bit higher than the others.

does anyone know what type of bulb the fog lights['02] take?

as soon as i can, [ i pick it up friday afternoon] i'll post pictures

My '97 Mountaineer vibrates at those speeds...oh wait a minute. I just forgot for a second that I live in Mississippi. That's why it vibrates so much. Darn Yazoo clay.

Have ya seen the rims on the F-150's FX4 package? Well, the ones on the Explorers are similar.
