ECU modification?

hey, i'm trying to decide whether i should try to do some tuning on the ECU of my 96 XLT, i've read that ford uses the PCM interface, and you need some hardware to get it to work with a pc, anyone have any bright ideas about where to get this stuff/how much it would cost? or if tuning the ECU is even worth it at all

For what purpose(s) do you want to make modifications?

Many can be made via a chip or tuner.
