"For shocks, I've noticed that readers have suggested the Bilsteins or Edelbrocks. I have to agree that the Bilsteins are a great shock, but (like me) if you don't want to lay out that cash, and you want a premium shock, here's a tip. The Edelbrock shocks (with the inertial valve) are manufactured by Gabriel, and, as such, are available under the Gabriel brand at a pretty good savings. I got a set of Pro Ryder Premium Gas Truck Shocks with VST (aka the inertial valve) for $19.99 each. The best price I could find on the Edelbrocks was $32.99. Granted, they're not red like the Edelbrock (black only), but it's the same shock for less money, and I really wasn't concerned with appearances. The OE shocks were black also."
I found this on another site. Does anybody know if this is legit?

Has anyone been able to substantiate this story? Let me know.

I THINK (?) that RockyLawrence here has them...

From what I have been able to gather, though, this is true...But it sure makes a guy wonder...

Phantom, I am curious as to were you gathered your info? I have gone to all the major brands (mentioned in all the posts) shocks trying to compare their produts. When visiting the Edelbrock and Gabriel sites I did not see any info to substansiate this claim. Though, I am very interested if this is true. I did get some prices on the three major brands mentioned: Bilstiens=59.00 ea.,
Edelbrock=69.00 ea., Monroe=32.00 ea., in case anyone is interested.

I have read about this before on Dr. Bob's Explorer Tips page.(It looks like this is where Phantom copied it from.) You can get there from the links page on this site.

So far I have not found any data to back this up or disprove it. However the local auto parts shops (Auto Zone and Discount Auto)have never heard of a Gabriel shock by this exact name. I also could not find a match at the Gabriel web site.

It may be true but so far it sounds like an urban legend. If anyone has better luck please let me know.

I remember seeing an ad for them on TV. It was on TNN. I was watching the Shade Tree Mechanic and the commercial came on. It had a scene of a truck or suv towing a boat down a winding country road. I am pretty sure that they were talking about these shocks but it was a Sunday morning after night shift so take it for what it is worth.

I just viewed the Pro Ryder commerical on T.V. watching the "Speed Vision" Channel. They are supposed to be carried by PEP Boy's. No price noted during the commercial. I hope this helps.

Had another thought, which of the two low priced shocks would be better, the Pro Ryders or the Sensa Tracs? Any experienced enthusiasts?

I had the Sensa Tracs on my XLT when it was stock and I wore them out in 4 months (no kidding) I don't know anything about the Pro Ryders since I switched to Ranchos after I wore out the Monroes.

I think the Sensa-Tracs are a "better" shock, b/c of the valving; I think this is illustrated on thier website (can't remember the address)

Sorry to take so long to respond but I was at a bachelor party in Key West for the past few days. Anyway, I did copy this from the Explorer Maintenance site that is linked here. I have not found out anything else. I'll try to get in touch with Gabriel and see what they have to say.

In reference to the Sensatrac shocks, it has splines cut into the shaft that allows the fluid to pass with less restriction (softer)in the middle of the stroke. When the shock compresses or extends past the splines the fluid no longer has the added path through the splines which stiffens (slows the rate) of the shock. Very simple and very reliable. I've had mine for more than a year with 35's with no problems. Note: be aware that NAPA, MIDAS, and a few others sell these shocks for almost twice the price as PARTS AMERICA (same part numbers--just a different color).

Guys, I have the Gabriel Pro Ryder LT VST. Seems like VST stands for Variable Speed Technology which was an inertia valve. I got them at Pep Boys a year ago for about $19.99 each. So they do exist. They had the Edelbrocks also, which were around $35. I didn't really compare them to see if they were the same or not, so I can not help there.

TOMMY2000,
hey that buy three get one free for the 9000's , will that be the same price (60.95)?and about what time did you say they would have the sale?
