I recently heard a story about someone getting trapped in a car when the battery cable vibrated loose and the power windows and locks became disabled.

The person was unable to open the windows or locks and had to call 911 for help. 911 didn't respond and she had to call her husband and ended up trapped in the car for half an hour waiting for help while in 95 degree sun.

There is a small panel on the rear hatch for access to unlatch lever they discovered.

Obviously the battery cable had been incorrectly tightened when the battery was replaced and the use of jumper cables may have also further dislodged or loosened the cable.

That's odd. Most vehicles have a way to get out when the doors get locked.
You either pull up on the lock, flick the lock to unlock manually (Most new Asian cars), or pull the inside door handle.. That unlocks the car.

This sounds like a stupid design. Any idea what car it was?

I believe the story involved GM's electronic door latches, alla the C6 and CTS Coupe. There's a lever in the kick panel that manually disengages the latch.

You'll never get stuck in an Explorer if your battery dies.
