3 days ago the check engine light came on, so I stopped at PEP Boys to see what the code was. The tech said that the egr valve was bad, so I picked up a new one and fought to replace it. Not having a 1 1/16" wrench, I took a 1" claw foot and ground it to work as a 1 1/16". Real proud of my self for that. Cleared the code by removing the ground cable, and all was fine. After about 15 miles on speedo, the light came back on. (crap, now what), Went back to PEP Boys, they said that the code was P0401 EGR valve. What do you think my responce was? ###### THAT,it was brand new. Now they want $85.95 to do a real check, so that I can replace the part that was realy bad. This sucks for an old timer who worked on cars back befor ALL of the SMOG crap, back when a CAR was a CAR. Now that the RANT is over, what if anything can I do to fix this, besides just throwing money at it?:dunno:

DPFE controlls the EGR. Just as an FYI... it's always to state in these forums the year, model vehicle & what eng you have & any other pertainant info. Helps with your resolution

Ford had extended coverageon dpfe because they were such a problem. It is never the egr valve.

Sorry everyone, The rant just came out first and closed off my mind. 2002, 4x4, 4.0, 163K, DPFE only 3mo old. Other than the Check engine light ON, truck runs fine. Any help or ideas needed.
