I just sold my 2015 PIU which I added a Prodigy brake controller, 7 blade trailer connector, and factory class 3 hitch to. It towed an aluminum horse trailer with sway control fine. I am upgrading to a 2019 PIU and want to know if there are any under the dash connectors in the standard wiring harness to simplify the job (in place of running a blue wire from the brake controller to the 7 blade connector and tapping into the brake switch)? Also any value in using a 7 blade T connector vs a 4 pin T connector at the passengers rear harness?

Welcome to the Forum.
Did your 2015 PIU have the brake controller plug? I have been unable to find posts that indicate that the PIU has that,
Also, keep in mind that adding a factory class III hitch does not change the legal towing capacity of the vehicle.
Hopefully, someone will know more about the wiring. Good luck.

No I never looked for it. I thought someone might know when a dealer does a tow package on a regular Explorer is the plug there? That would never happen on a PIU because as you say it was never certified by the factory to tow more than 2000 lbs. But how many versions of the under the dash harness did Ford offer in 2019 and was the PIU harness unique?

I can't say for sure but I would think the harness would be standard one used in all Explorers if for no other reason than to save costs. Also, I don't believe any dealer has installed a tow package on the 5th gen Explorer. I've read posts by members saying that dealers do not do modifications to the vehicles. BTW, the PIU is rated to tow 2500 lbs.

Thanks Peter, yes I thought the same thing but none of the brake controller companies sell a plug-in harness like they do for the trucks.
Good to know, I am usually right around 2500 lbs for our horse and trailer, but have trailered a 2nd horse on occasion.

You could go get a bluetooth one. There nice just plugs into a 12v plug

I recently installed towing hook on my 2018 PIU and there are no wires for 7 pin plug in the connector under bumper. Just for 4 pin.
