emergency brake cable adjustment

my emergency brake lever in my 01 explorer does dot engage the switch,thus leaving the light on all the time,unless I pull up on the lever,is this just a matter of taking slack out of the cable.The parking brake shoes are brand new and adjusted properly.

Check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, it is probably low. Refill it and the light will likely go out as I bet it does after you have driven for a while.

no its not the fluid level.its the light that comes on when the parking brake is depressed.

I ended up cutting the cable then taking out the slack and connecting the 2 ends with a coupla cable clamps,works like a charm but im wondering if it will pass inspection like that.
