My 04 xlt is at the dealer having the rear end rebuilt ( under warranty ) and they phoned me to say one of the brake shoes in the rear that operate the emergency brakes has a hair line crack and they wanted to know if I would like for them to replace it. Cost is $ 271.00. WOw. Called advance auto they have them is stock for $ 35. I've always replaced my brakes myself as well as made many small repairs, but never this, does any one have any info or links on replacing the emergency brake shoes ? Thanks

Thunderbyrd - similar to a post I just made for replacing the rear wheel bearing, this job just takes a bit of patience, but is otherwise not bad.

Take off the wheel, caliper and rotor - the rotor might require the patience I was talking about. But if the dealer has had it off recently, it might come right off. I also remove the connection to the emergency brake, but I dont think you need to do this. Then it's just a matter of taking off the pins (held on by spring clips) and take off the two springs. Then reverse. The one pin goes through the knuckle and I rigged up a special tool to hold it in place with pressure from behind the knuckle while I was pushing on it with the spring retention clip on the front side.

$271 by the dealer? No way!! I would do it yourself if you are comfortable with this type of work.
