I'm new to the forum ...

I was searching the web for suggestions or solutions to my 2001 Ranger problem ... which brought me to this site .. (possibly find a link to similiar Ford model problem?).

History: 2001 RangerXLT, manual trans, small 4, 2 wheel drive, bought new ... has 93k miles on it now ... this problem started about 4 years ago ... each fix will last about 10-12 months ..

Problem: engine will accelerate with the clutch in & foot off the gas .. stop sign/intersection or driving on the road .. when it acts up, it doesn't matter ... rpms rev from 2500 to 3400 and back again ... may do this multiple times before going to normal operation ... this will happen only on occasion .. naturally, not always for the dealer. Seems to be happening more lately ..

First fix in 2006 ... replace idle air control (#1) ... lasted about 14 months ... replaced again (#2) ... lasted about 10 months ... third time replaced again (#3) ... lasted about 7 months ... next time replaced fuel sensor (lasted about 6 months) ... this last time, dealer stumped, cleaned and checked cables etc ... lasted 4 days ... I'm at a loss .. do I take back to the stumped dealer or go to an independant for a fresh look .. this probelm is wearing on me (getting $$)

anyone out there have ideas?

Welcome to this forum! I wonder if you have a vacuum leak. Do you hear any noises or have a code with a check engine light? Did you check the accelerator cable linkage for any signs of it getting caught on somthing?

No check engine light ...
No unusual sounds ...
I've tried to pinpoint whether it rainy or sunny, humid, hot, cold ... doesn't seem to make a difference
Last night did it constantly, at a stop sign with the clutch in & foot off the gas ... or driving through town 35-40mph, put clutch in, foot off gas same results ..doesn't seem to matter.
I had apptmnt with dealer again this morning. Of course it wasn't doing it then, so I left. Will be bringing it back when it acts up again. I suggested disconnecting the cruise control, just as long shot that it is a possible problem. The mechanic said it wouldn't be related. The last time it was in ... couple of weeks ago, they checked cabling & connections.

I'm open to any possible solutions.
