engine knocks when under load

Did Ford use a knock sensor on this vehicles? 4.0 liters and 5.0 liters? Someone said that they didn't but in one of the replies someone mentioned a knock sensor.

We have a 98 F150 6 cylinder at work and it knocks like crazy under slight load. It's probably because it's driven inside a chemical plant and seldom sees more than 30 mph since it was purchased new. They "fixed" it at one time but it's knocking again.

I once experienced engine knock on my 68 Fairlane 302 after using 87 octane. I had been running 93 because I thought that was the equivilant to leaded fuel in 1968. Turned out the timing was advanced too far. Then learned the engine had an 8.5 C/R and now runs fine on 87.

I've turbocharged a few Fiat engines and always experience engine knock during the tuning stage. I was once using water\alcohol injection as a band aid solution. It worked to some degree. Turned out the alcohol was making up for the lean fuel mixture. Pure water didn't do anything. But one side effect was it blasted all the carbon buildup off the pistons. This is a twin cam and the spark plugs go in the top of the head like a Ford 8N tractor so I can actually see the tops of the pistons on this engine.

I've always wondered if connecting the windshield washer hose to a vacuum port temporarily then activating the washer pump under a heavy load would blast off any carbon buildup.

works good on freeweay speeds. it also did it getting on to the freeway. i dont have the explorer anymore and even before i sold it i had the engine replaced with a used one. but ya try that stp octane boost.
