I have an '03 AWD V8 Mountaineer, and when driving it sounds like a power steering pump is over working (had this happen on a Dodge product about 10 years ago). Since there is no difference in the sound when going straight or turning, I would think that it may not be the power steering pump. The volume/pitch is related to the engine speed.

Has anyone had this experience, or have any suggestions?

Oh, my Mountaineer has 60,000 miles, so there isn't a warranty to fall back on.

could be powersteering pump. noise being relative to engine speed could be the pully on the pump.

Ford PS pumps have a reputation for being noisy.

If you can indeed isolate the sound at the pump, try switching to full synthetic PS fluid, it often does wonders for noise reduction.

Good luck ....

Thanks! I will check that out this weekend and look to change the fluids out.
