Hi Guys!
I have a 96 XLT with 115K miles but in really good condition and well maintained but over the last year it misses when trying to maintain speed on a slight freeway grade. RPM is at about 2000-2500. If I press on the throttle such that it downshifts there is no miss and response is fine. Do you think this is clogged injectors? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Cole

Mine was doing kind of the same thing. I have a 91 Explorer XLT. It was the fuel pressure regulator. Check the vacuum hose on the regulator and see if you have wet fuel in the line. Just something you might check. You can also take it to Auto Zone. In my town, they will hook up an error code checker and see if there are any codes. They will tell you what they are. They dont charge you for this here.

Thanks for the tip

Thanks, I'll check that. I thought since I had been burning Arco gas for awhile that maybe something in the injectors were gummed up.

Also change the plug wires if they have over 80,000 miles on them.

Change the plugs if they have not been done in 40-50 thousand.

My 92 did the same thing. It was plug wires.

I have a 1999 XLT 102,000. with a similar problem maybe, you tell me... I get to a constant speed, the RPM dies down and it seems as if there is no power, I let off the gas and then re-apply a little more agressive, it downshifts and works fine... if I don't do that and decide to push deeper on the gas there is no power and I hear a grind in the rear and it accellerates. A mechanic told me my transmission was going and I had about a year of life left in it. Is this a similar issue?
