engine number location

ive just changed the V6 engine in my 1999 explorer for a new crate V6, but i cant find the engine number on either the old engine or new one, i was told it was on the rear of the block or on the side but there are none to be found, can anyone help me ?

I recently had the 4.0L SOHC engine out of my 2001 Sport Trac. The engine number is laser etched in 2 places. On the driver's side front, under the exhaust header on a machined surface. This number is small and I couldn't even see it until I cleaned the area with a wire brush and some fine sand paper. The other place I found the number (and it was much easier to see) was on the rear of the engine block on the driver's side.

In the pic below, note the area I've marked in white on the front side of the block...
