Hi, I am new to the site, but I have a hudge problem. I have a 04 explorer with 95,000 miles on it. I do most of the maintenance myself, but I am in the military so when deployed the wife take it to the local for dealership. last month she took it in for a oil change, and It had beed runing fine. Last week after being parked for a couple days the engine is now knocking. After some troubleshooting, I removed #1 spark plug and when cranked over it shoots oil out.

I think I had a head gasket go which leaked into the cylinder and bent a rod. I am not sure what to do. Do I have the engine rebuilt, or replace it with another one. any advice would be appriciated.

Well, of $$ were not a factor a rebuilt engine would be ideal. But, maybe you could find a low mile used one. Maybe even from a newer X

Thanks Matt for the reply. Now with the 4.0, would it matter what vehicle it came from, I found several that came out of Rangers with low mileage, but the ads say Ranger only. The Ranger engines seem to run cheaper that the few explorer engines I have found.

dont the rangers have diff heads and timing?

I am not sure, I still can't belive that I need an engine. I took care of this vehicle it should have at least 50,000 miles left on it.
