my friend has a 93 explorer, and she says that when she first cranks it in the morning when its cold, and she shifts into gear the engine will shut off. anybody have an idea as to what might be wrong?

not intended to offend any women...

Considering you did say she says the engine cuts off, when was the last time the engine was tuned up? It may be just running poorly until it warms up. Putting in in gear and putting resistance on the engine may be causing it to stall out. If it's been forever since the last tune up, she should have a tune up done.
new air filter
new spark plugs
new spark plug wires
change oil
change transmission fluid filter
new fuel filter
All of those should help the engine run better, which may solve the problem.
BTW, every woman I know (girlfriend, mom, aunts, female friends, etc...) couldn't tell me when the last time their vehicles were worked on if their lives depended on it. Their boyfriends/husbands keep up with it for them. THAT is why I mentioned the 'she' thing. NOT to offend any women who DO keep up with that stuff, just saying that all women I KNOW do not.

yeah....she got this explorer used a couple months ago and i really dont know when the last time it was worked on. i guess i should see if she has the previous owner's paper work on that stuff. but since im not sure if thats the case, anybody else think they might know whats up?

Well..I agree with John in his post..and I also put in the disclaimer about not intending to offend women here..

But I must say, I know a lot of women who just jump in their car/truck/whatever first thing in the morning and don't let it warm up at all. They expect it to "go" right away. If it doesn't then it's "broken". I always say it's best to let it warm up for a little esp. if it was a cold night.

yeah, i kinda doubt that she waits for the car to warm up before puttin it in gear, ill let her know that she needs to let it warm up for a minute when its been really cold.

i have a 92 ford explorer and as soon as you put your foot on the break and put it in gear it dies
