Engine & transmission were rebuilt, and it has no power. Codes 305, 306, and 171.
Hi everyone,
My 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4.6L V8 has no power after an engine and transmission rebuild.
OPERATION:
The explorer seems normal but has no power. The transmission seems to shift only at 2Krpm, any higher RPM and the engine whines out, then kind of bogs down with a machine gun type rattle. The rpms jump up past 3Krpm immediately once the trannsmission shifts gears. It will not go faster then 65-70 mph and it starts to "hesitate" at that speed like the old Uhaul trucks that had governers on them for 55mph..
TESTS/RESULTS:
Idles good enough@~800rpm, never stalls.
Compression is ~125psi in each cylinder.
Fuel pressure normal at idle & HWY operations and holds at least 30 minutes after shutdown.
New fuel filter and checked fuel lines and regulator.
Timing between the crank and cam(s) has been physically verified.
Cams and Valves look OK.
Vacuum at the throttle body brake port is normal at 22hg.
Back pressure is OK at less than 2.5psi @ 2.5Krpm (tested @EGR pipe).
Sensors MAF, IAC, EGR, & TPS all test normal. (finally all replaced with new)
PCV valve replaced and all hose parts concerned with vacuum.
Brake booster check valve is good.
It even passed a smog test with no abnormal readings.
New Crank position sensor wheel
all new coils & fuel injectors
Wiring harnesses refurbished/replaced
CODES:
Occasionally several codes show up; 0305, 0306 & 0171 (cylinder 5 & 6 misfire & lean right cylinder bank) I have replaced that coil, later I swapped several coils around but it still comes on infrequently after 20 minutes on the freeway. I can slooowly get my speed up to ~65mph but it is just inertia---I can't pass anyone. It seems to work reasonably well from 0-20mph but I have to feather it for the tranny to shift out of first.
ENGINE REBUILD HISTORY:
I used a local machine shop to rebuild my 4.6L V8 engine (timing guides/chain went at 86K; 4 rods replaced). I have been fixing/replacing everything from a loose bolt on the harmonic balancer to recycled gaskets that this bozo did incorrectly. I pulled the Timing cover and checked the timing etc , it was correct. (On the 1st try the shop had it 180 out)
Thanks any advice
04/25/12 Solution!!!! Turns out the Bay muffler shop in Mtn View is crooked--the guy supposedly checked my catalytic converters but he intentially distroyed one catalytic converter- his "inspection hole" he burned in using a torch was right into the cat platinum material. Since I had paid him to check them twice-- I had eliminated the cats from consideration!! Turns out he was running a scam with the engine machine shop guy and another shop. He was the ringer trying to get me to use a third shop to fix the problems from him and the 1st guy. i finaly broke down and had a highly recommended shop cut the cats off and the one he ruined looked like it had big lumps of loose grey clay in it--completely clogged. One new cat and all the problems solved!!! Scary lesson--I spent two years tearing the engine apart and checking and rechecking components and wiring. The good part is that now my 2002 explorer runs fine and I know a lot more about computerized vehicles now!!! Turns out the mechanics were all friends and they were supplementing their drug habits (meth) with made-up work. After 2 years of hell I am just glad to have my explorer back. Lesson learned--always have a totally independent double-check when things do not make sense!!!
