If someone can direct me to a different forum or thread I'm all yours because I have been searching like crazy with no luck:(, so decided to post here (it is kind of a modification).

To make this short, how hard is it to put in a '97 4.0 (it's not a SOHC) engine into a '92. There is a '92 for sale with a rebuilt '97 engine for $600. The guy dose not have time for it anymore and just wants to get a few bucks out of it. The engine is sitting in the explorer, just needs hooked up. The research that I did shows that a '92 and '97 have different computers. Will everything still work. One source told me I just have to change the intake. Could it be that simple?

I really do appreciate any input because I will be going to look at it/possibly buy it this week.

Welcome To The Forum! I believe they have diff computers. Is it bolted to the frame and tranny yet?

It is bolted up. Only the wiring remains. The info I found stated that the '92 had an OB1 computer, where the '97 used an OB2. I am not sure what other differences there would be (censors...). The owner already changed the intake, and says that is the only mod needed.

I am a carburated Bronco guy, so this is all pretty new to me. I did see pictures, and the explorer is beatiful. The chasis is in great shape and it has practically new leather interior. If the engine will work, it is well worth $600.

Yeah, it does have the OBDII it deals with sensors and emissions I believe. Someone more knowledgeable will jump in here and explain it to ya better than I can.

Thanks guys. I'm still searching, and found out some more info. Definately the intake and some say the exhaust manifolds need swapped. I think that is all that needs to be done. It deals with the egr valve and O2 censor....I think.

I didn't think it'd need to much stuff swapped, but didn't want to give ya the wrong info.

i'd get it. just for the fact you have a 97 engine/tranny which if it runs well, probably would cost more then 600 dollars.

i'm doing the same to my explorer sometime this summe.r

i saw that ad for the 92 with the 97 engine in the paper shop. if i had the 600 id buy it.

If he still has it, I'm going to get it. Of course I have to go look at it first.
It is supposed to have a rebuilt transmission and transfer case also.

I did not find anything else or any definates, but I think I just need to swap the intake, which has already been done.
