Just wondered what kind of numbers I could pull out of these few, small, somewhat cheap upgrades which is all I decided I need right now. I have a 96' 4.0 V6 OHV, and I know I cannot get exact numbers without a dyno.

Apnet Custom Tuned Chip
BBK Single 66mm High-Flow Throttle Body
KKM True-Rev Induction Kit

Firstly, I'd add catback exhaust to that list.

I'd say you'd go from 120 hp at the wheels stock to maybe 135 hp after those 4 mods. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it makes a big difference. Tq will go up about the same amount. You should cut almost a second off your 1/4 mile.

well the problem with the cat-back is the aftermarket muffler sound, on some trucks it goes with the looks/ appearence thing. I would rather not have my explorer with a such a rumble for right now becuase it is basically so stock I think it would look completely stupid, (Anti-Rice) unless I decide to go bigger in the future.

Gibson exhausts are very quiet.
Borla exhausts are quiet with a nice rumble with throttle.

Magnaflow exhausts don't have to be loud. If sized correctly it should not be too loud or ricey. And your mods would not be complete without catback exhaust. You'd be strangling your engine. And you don't have to put a big ricey tip on it, you can just have your custom pipe exit like stock.

I own a 90 Ranger automatic with same motor as you(4.0L). With 4wd and 30x9.50x15 tires I ran a 17.2@74mph in the 1/4 mile. Mods include a KKM tru rev induction, Perfomance exhaust, and a "superchip". I had a chip and my induction kit before my exhaust and I noticed the most improvement when the performance exhaust was on so you need to include that in your upgrades. If you cannot afford the exhaust when you by your mods then ditch the throttle body.

alright thanks for everything folks. Alec I find you to be very helpful (sometimes too much) on all my posts lol

A friend of mine’s son just bought a 2000 with 4.0 SOHC motor. It had a few mods installed:
Cat back with Flowmaster 40
KKM
Superchip
He has a 3.73 rear end. He is wondering what HP he now has and how fast he can do the ¼ mile.

Any ideas?

4.0 SOHC?

Probably about 230 at the crank (a bit optimistic maybe). High 15s or 16 flat in the 1/4.

Thanks Alec; any other opinions?

He said he was going to have it dynoed ( he goes to school in Atlanta ) and said he would let me know.

About the exhuast, for performance per dollar spent what would you suggest the borla at around $400 or the gibson at around $215? The borla looks like it is has a much higher overall quality than that of the gibson. Also do you know where I might find some sound clips of the borla and the gibson?

I suggest Magnaflow ;) It will be a little louder than either of those 2 but will be cheaper and has a lifetime warranty. The Gibson is very quiet, almost like stock. The Borla is louder under throttle and a bit more burbly, but still fairly quiet. For $400 though, definately not worth it.

If you mean 4.0 SOHC then could be anywhere from mid 15s to low 16s depending on # of doors and 2WD/4WD. I've seen times of 15.5 for 4x4 SOHC Sports with exhaust, chip and intake. Mine ran 16.3 with 50K on it stock so 15.5 sounds about right with the mods.

I tried to get a magnaflow but....

i have a 2 door . 96 stick
alec can you be of any help?????

Chris,
You need a single in, single out 2.5" Magnaflow muffler and 2.25 or 2.5" tailpipe. Go to your local Magnaflow installer and have them make a custom setup for you.

I agree with Alec. I purchased the Flowmaster kit and it didnt fit and I had to modify the mounts and pipe to make it work. Have a shop do it and request mandrel bent 14 (heavier)gage pipe. :redexp:

thanks 4 your help

Alec and his wet dreams with magnaflow ;) . Btw, the gibson is much louder than the stock. But it is (from reading) quiet compaired to the rest.

I am happy with my gibson so far.

He called his dad with a 207 rwhp number from the dyno, he didn't report the torque.

If that number is accurate, then that's damn good with only a few mods!
