I have a '91 Explorer 4X4, had since new, 185,000 miles. I love my "ride" and hate to give it up. I am not a gear head. How can I evaluate the practicality of fixing it up -- maybe needs transmission overhaul, a few drips here and there, needs painting (would love a loud orange job) , new front seats, sound system (I ride around with an old am-fm portable radio now), I occasionally have to "wiggle" wires in the driver's wire harness to get windows up and down, few other bugs. Just had the A/C overhauled. I basically would like to "pimp my ride". Any advice on the life expectancy of the drive train and body? Thanks to all who might help.

Well, it really depends how well you've kept up on regular maintenance with the drivetrain. The engines are generally very reliable (expect 250,000+ with regular maintenance). The transmissions are not so bulletproof, especially a 91-92 year truck. With zero maintenance, the A4LD trans can give it up after 120,000 miles. With regular fluid an filter changes, and reasonable use (i.e. no heavy towing in hills) you can get a lot more out of them. Depends how you use it. Or how you abuse it, I should say...

Body-wise I'd say common corrosion areas in these trucks are the rocker panels (bottom of the doors) and in the wheel wells, especially the rear wells. Being in Atlanta, GA helps you, as you don't have to worry too much about road salt and all that in the winter. You can look at your truck and tell about the body. Another thing, at that age truck, you may have frame rust..not a big deal, but you probably ought to take care of it at some point.

Thanks Rhett

Thanks Rhett. Transmission was overhauled at about 75,000 -- almost totally city driving. Seems it always needed lots of brake work, too. I do keep up with mtc., religiously change oil at 3,000 or sooner.
