I'm probably going to get ripped apart on this list, butI'm out of places to look.
Here's mt sitch: My sister just totalled her '99 Explorer with the 4.0L motor, an automatic, and 2WD. fortunately, she walked away from a broadside hit and a serios rollover with almost no injuries. However, we now have a brand new drivetrain wrapped around a hulk of scrap metal. I'd like to swap this drivetrain into a Jeep that I have lying around, but there's the 2WD problem. Can I save the tranny, pull off the tailshaft housing, and put on a transfer case? Or do I need to swap output shafts in the tranny? What stick operated transfer case can i put on a ford transmission? I'd appreciate any help on this.
thanks,

rich

You won't get ripped apart on this list.

Didn't her insurance cover it? You should be able to take the tailhousing off of a 4wd Explorer and bolt it on. I don't think there is any need to change the tailshaft. If you use an Explorer or Ranger 4.0L manual transfer case, Borg-Warner 13-54, it will bolt right up.

Hi Rich,
Glad your sister is OK. It looks like you are going to buy the Crashed Explorer from the Insurance Co.,otherwise you won't able to take anything off of the vehicle, which leads me to this question. Are you going to sell any of the salvageable parts?
P.S. Everyone is welcome on this site, we ask that you come with an open mind and encourage you to participate. Dead Link Removed

See Rich, I told you there were nice guys on this site. I only occasionally read that other Explorer forum and then only for a laugh or 2 from the Beavis type commentary. This site is the place to be.

hey rich, Paul is right about the tranny and t-case, the tailhousing should swap out with a 4wd tailhousing i think ford wanted $160 for the housing i paid $80 to have mine welded and trussed backtogether. you plan on hooking this up to the oem jeep front axle. ? is this correct? what axle, model jeep etc.? this might also be a good time to swap in the explorer rear end with disc brakes and find a classic bronco dana 44 front end, just think you get a coil front with longass radius arms, it's what half the jeepers have anyway, dana 44 anyway. i only mention the dana 44 front cause if you were planning on using the explorer rear you would want an axle about the same width.

i second the question, any other salvageable parts? good luck let us know how it goes
