My 95 xlt has the v-6 and auto trans. I don't know if it's just old or what, but it sounds like crap. Mabye the exhaust is just in need of replacement, but I dont know. What do you think? I hate it when it downshifts, and revs up to climb a hill, and my passenger says: "careful, I think your car is gonna fall apart"

any ideas of what it could be?

Not trying to flame or anything, but It would be helpful if you included some more information because your post is quite vague.

its just like the engine is unusually loud. no ticks or anything, just noisy.

So you hear it comming from the engine? Does your exhaust sound ricey?

Sorry I missed that part. Thats exactly what my 97 did when the transmission was going. Do you notice it slipping gears at all?

well, the tranny was rebuilt about 8 months ago. any other ideas?

i thought your tranny is supposed to downshift up hills?

Can you isolate the noise at all? You mentioned that you thought it could be the exhaust. If your muffler is rusted through, or the exhaust pipes upstream of the muffler are rusted through, that will make the engine roar at high RPM's. There are a myriad of other possibilities, too, and we would need more information (type of noise, where the noise comes from, and so on) to really help pin it down. My best advice at this point is to see if you can determine that the exhaust system is/isn't the culprit. If you don't feel comfortable crawling underneath it to look for holes in the exhaust pipes/muffler, go to a muffler shop. Most muffler shops will do a free exhaust inspection in the hopes of finding something wrong.
