Mostly to keep a log of my own memory before I forget, I thought I would make a list of the parts on my 1996 Ranger 4.0 4x4 which are failure prone and have been replaced, and those which have been proven to be tough as nails. Maybe this will help someone some day, if deciding whether to buy a Ranger, or some other reason. As the truck is a 1995 build, it's now almost 20 years old, though it does have pretty low mileage at 170,000kms. Still, I am surprised how many parts are bone stock original and working like the day they were made.

Never been touched (other than routine maintenance i.e. fluids, brake pads, tune up etc):

All motor internals (head and below);
Exhaust manifold, cat, pipes, muffler;
Rear suspension/axle/diff;
Entire brake system & lines (other than e-brake cable);
Automatic hubs, transfer case, shift motor;
Starter, A/C compressor, alternator, water pump, steering rack, radiator, heater core, blend door, gas tank & lines, fuel pump, etc.
Both driveshafts, front diff, wheel bearings (have been repacked but never replaced)
95% of electricals including computer, relays, MAF, dash cluster, switches.. probably only changed 3 fuses ever
Door handles, tailgate handle, window cranks, that kind of stuff

Now for the things that have needed to be fixed over the years:

IAC Valve (6+ times, these are garbage)
EGR valve & pipe (twice)
DPFE sensor (twice)
A/C accumulator tank (that foam sleeve around it trapped moisture and made it rust out)
EVAP solenoid (again, ill-advised foam sleeve) & hoses
Upper (air leak) and lower (coolant leak) intake gaskets
Heater control valve
Cruise control "firestarter" switch
Transmission soft parts (preventative, had a 2-3 flare...)
Front suspension: axle U-joints (several times); upper and lower ball joints (at least twice), a tie rod, radius arm bushings, stab.link bushings
Belt tensioner (3 times)
Transmission range sensor (was preventing 4x4 Low from working)
E-brake cable
Power lumbar switches/valves (repaired them a couple times but they keep failing, finally gave up)

I guess that's it!

Ahh the memories, lol great list

Just for posterity.
geez the original post musta been bad luck.
Within 6 mos lost the original starter & alternator.. no surprise really. Also patched a hole in the front cat. Then lost the cam synchro and steering box.
Add shocks to the "still original" list, fuel injectors, gas tank, fuel pump & lines, & all bushings other than sway bar and RABs .. but they are all done, ride is a carnival rattler these days. Leaf spring mount bushings look like crispy Pringles.
Still runs like a top, 4x4 works great, a/c blows ice cubes & heater breathes fire.

What's your mileage up to these days?
