I just purchased a used 2000 Explorer Eddie Bauer with the V8. I have owned many Fords, but am new to the Explorer family, and am concerned about a faint whining that I am not sure where is coming from, and a popping/crunching noise/feeling coming from the steering whenever I make a u-turn. I have checked fluids and all are at normal/full levels. I am also not sure if it is 2WD or AWD. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

I think that the u-turn pop is because you (as me) had lost a rubber end, which have located in the inner of the wheel assembly, and prevent that the Steering Knuckle hit the lower arm (or other part that I don't remember)

Select Vehicle and enter VIN from link below. "Drive" shows either AWD, 4WD, or RWD (2WD)

If AWD or 4WD, have a reputable shop inspect, especially your CV (Constant Velocity) joints.
