Hey everyone

I hope everyone is having a good new year. Anywho, It is snowing here and i have to leave work in an hour to go home. Do i have to back up to unrelease the 4x4. I read of a guy on this site who does that to unlock the hubs or something. Also, the other night it was a little snowy and i went up a huge hill and got stuck in 2wd. I stopped, put the X in auto 4wd in the middle of the hill. Then i started back up and the 4wd sounded really loud, and i know there is supposed to be some harshness and noise. Is this just because the 4wd had to transfer a lot of torque to the front wheels or???

Finally snow

Does it still work alright?Mine does the same thing when it first engages.

yeah, it pulled me right up the hill, just loud and the was a lot of vibration

How is it looking up there in clinton? Here we have about and inch or so, just enough to have a little fun for me!!

Geoff

We have a little over 2 inches.Does it make the noise all the time?Have you ever ate at famous daves?

First off, how do ya like this snow we jus got? I love it, my night class was canceld:D

Since you have a 96 Explorer, your front axle is alway's engaged so you don't have to back up to unlock your front hubs.

I'm not too sure about the auto 4WD though, mine clunks a bit when I'm in snow and it's reaching for traction. Did it get you up the hill, if it did that's obviously a very good sign. Also if it stopped clunking on dry surfaces I'd say it's normal, but it's hard to tell if anything's wrong over the internet.

Put it in 4wd auto and leave it. You don't have to back up, there are no hubs for you to unlock. Noise and harshness are normal when the power is transfered to wheels with good traction.

the vibration was it probaly was locking up posi

Thanks guys,

To 88verty, no it doesnt usually do it b/c i am in 2wd, but in 4x4 it usually makes a little noise. I will wait and see if something happens and if not, good. I have never eaten at famous daves suprisingly. I have eaten everywhere else her but there. My girlfriends best friend works at famous daves and said the food is terrific. I will go there this weekend and let ya know.

It pulled me right up the hill with no problems at all. I am bummed that the snow isnt going to be here much longer though. I want it to snow 9-12 inches and really test what the x is like then. This piddily little 2 inch crap needs to stop.

I was thinking that i have one side hub that is always engaged and the other engages and dis-engages on a vacuum line. Am I right?

Thanks and it is good to see more and more iowa people on this site considering it is the best tool that i have for the x. Better than any mechanics shop.

I am going there tonight buddy. Thanks for the info:D If you ever need help working on your ride give me a hollar:D

cool cool man, i will definately let ya know if i need help and the same goes for you. Just give me ring and i will give you a hand. I dont have near the knowledge you do, but i understand cars, when explained to me and i am sure you could use an extra hand on sometimes. Also, let me know how the restraunt is after you get done b.c my girlfriends birthday is saturday and we are going there so.

Later
Geoff:)

I just got back 20 min ago the food is awesome.Great ribs and very resonable priced.Do you have a sound system in your ex?

Yes i do. I have two 12" aluminum cones eclipse subs and a rockford fosgate bd1000a1 amp. Do you have anything in your x?

Also, it snowed again last night and i just want to say again that i love the control trac, although a little rough, it gets me everywhere i need to go easily. Does your front end make any funny noises from time to time?

the reason i ask b/c last night i was turning right into a parking spot and about half way through the turn the x made a weird noise and it is almost like it hopped forward. it is hard to explain but my girlfriend said her 97 blazer does that quite often. I was kinda thinking ball joints, but it more sounded like something with the steering rack. This is the only time it has every done that so maybe it was just a fluke.

It could have just been in the angle I would not worry about it unless it starts doing it all the time.I dont have nothing for a system right now I just took it out a couple of months ago.I might be getting rid of my ex for a newer one:D

what year, options, and trim line you lookin at?

I really want some thing 95 to 97 4 door clean v-6 3.73 gear for towing and 4x4:D

i think that is what i have. are the 3.73 gears a limited slip?

Also, i have been meaning to ask you. It has been really cold here the past couple days as you know and i noticed that when i first start to take off, my engine revs higher that normal. It is almost like the tranny isnt fully catching. After it is warm is doesnt do it though. Any ideas.?

Geoff:D

Trannys always shift slow when the fluid is cold.Nothing to worry about but I recommend a few more min to warm up:D

Geoff

Where have you been hiding?:D
