I made it to work this morning, and was backing into my parking stall, when - you guessed it - big noise, copius fluid and a quick reversion to 'arm-strong' steering! At least I wasn't on the freeway....

At first, I suspected the pump - but it was replaced already in 1999. Grimacing, I opted to take it to a shop and take my chances. Low and behold, we found out that the steering gearbox itself had schrapneled! One of the big-ass 3/8 bolts that holds it together appeared to have sheared completely off, probably due to stress fractures or some cosmic misalignment. Lucky me, I found a used 1994 specimen for $300 and the shop gave me a deal on the labour.

Which leads me to a question... has anyone else had something similar happen, or thoughts on causes? The guy at the shop felt it was a freak incident and not to expect another one like it.
