ok this has been bothering me for a while now, i'll go out in the morning sometimes to start the 92 X and i'll turn the key, and it will turn over but won't start, it'll damn near start but it won't. Then i'll try again right away, and boom starts right up like a brand new car. I was just wondering what is doing this.

i have....

New plugs and wires.
Optima Yellow top.
cone air filter. *not sure if that even matters*

can u help me out?
thanks

sounds like you arent letting the fuel system presseurize. Before turing the key to "CRANK" let it stay in "RUN" for about 3 seconds to prime the fuel rails.
Also, remember, your engine is over 10yrs old............

Good Luck,
Al

Repeat this 2 or 3 times before turning the key all the way to start if doing it once doesn't work. If it starts right up, then the check valve in your fuel line is probably shot, letting the gas flow back to the tank.

ok very cool.....i'll try that and see what happens

One way to tell when its pressurized, is when you first turn your key, you will hear a little wine underneath your Ex, to me it sounds like an airplane landing hear coming down:p , and it will only last a few seconds.

yea i get that sound.... my friend pointed it out to me

You might want to start paying attention to your gas mileage and tailpipe (spits black "water"). My Navajo did this same thing for about 6 months, the pump would prime and then you would turn it over and it wouldn't start. One bump on the next try and it started. Eventually the fuel pressure regulator went out and it wouldn't start at all. Since your truck is about the same age as mine it might be the same problem starting. After repair mine starts right up first try as normal.
If you eventually need to replace it do it yourself. The part is kinda spendy but the labor would double it easy and it is right on top on the passenger side rail.

I have the exact same problem. First turn, sputter then stall, second turn, starts right up. This only happens in the morning or after the truck sat for a while.

I have found if I prime the fuel pump 2 times before ignition, it will start right up.

I also was told it could be the check valve in the sending unit.

My float aint floating so I think I might just drop the tank and replace the sending unit. the fuel pump has 137k miles on it so replacing that would be a precautionary measure

Also, I changed the fuel and air filters, and cleaned out the ISC and throttle body without any luck.

Next I am gonna check the fuel pressure regulator.

I also have a 92 that has just stared doing this, i'm glad i found this post, I was about to post my own

My 95 is doing the same thing, getting progressively worse. Now I'm also getting surging acceleration, like the pump isn't evenly getting fuel to the engine under moderate throttle. Could this still be a regulator problem??

holter95: That sounds like a clogged fuel filter. When was the last time you had it replaced?

Everyone else: To see if it's the check valve, hook up a pressure gauge to the schrader valve (passenger side fuel rail) overnight. If the pressure has bled off by the morning, your check valve is bad. To see if it is the regulator, attach the pressure gauge and turn the key to RUN (but don't start the engine). The pressure should remain constant at 30-40 PSI. If it is quite a bit higher, it is the regulator. If the pressure goes up to the normal range and immediately falls off, it could either be the regulator (they can stick open as well as closed when they fail) or a leaking injector. Both will cause the hard starting problem.

Good luck!

Mike

Mine does this too, what about that "BLACK WATER?" I though that was my anitfreeze leaking into my exaust system. does black water come out all the time till you fixed this?
