Noob "off roader" if you can call it, last Sunday was my first time taking the X out and about, as i said earlier it has been my daily for the past years, needing some work i decided this year to start fixing some stuff on it, i did most of the maintenance and finally fixed the 4x4, installed the Jeep front manual hubs and have been itching to try them out.

I am for sure a noob, been out before done plenty of camping and small wheeling trips but never behind the wheel, until Sunday, I went out to Sandoval County, a spot called Puerco, mainly sand dunes and such for dirt bikes and side by sides. I did not try to go up the main dune, but found a small trail that goes north from there, http://www.captainswoop.com/trails/abq/rio_puerco/index.html this will give you guys a better idea. Found some nice hills and plenty of spots to get stuck, and to my surprise the X performed a lot better than what i imagined. Ill admit most of the terrain was packed dirt and this was more of an overland driving trip, it was still lots of fun. Planning on a few upgrades as she is basically stock now.

One question i had, given my limited experience, because of the terrain it didnt seem necessary to be in 4x4 all of the time, i drove around for a while on the dirt, on my first hill where i couldnt get up i engaged 4x4 and locked my front hubs, 4x4 worked excellent, after that i left both hubs locked but kept engaging and disengaging the 4x4 switch as i seemed necessary, is this normal or even ok? is there a better way i should be doing this?

Any input is appreciated it, or if you want to laugh about it thats fine too, gotta start somewhere

No laughing here, you are getting some flex going on. What tire size are you running? Any lift? The pics on the cliff are great. Around here that view would be obscured by big trees.

I've always been of the mind that as long as you're off pavement, there's no need to go in-and-out of 4x4. I just leave mine in until I get to a paved road. What is bad is if you get on a paved road, there's not much opportunity for slippage, and that can put pressure on your u-joints and hubs (if you're locked in 4x4 on pavement). I'm sure you know what I mean, if you've ever turned a corner on pavement locked in 4x4 in front.

Thanks a lot, im running the bfg ko2 31x10.5 on 15" wheels, suspension is mostly stock, installed extended shackles and add-a-leaf in the read when i first got it, 7 years ago, front is completely stock aside from the warn hubs. So no lift, thought about undoing my sway to get a bit more travel maybe. That picture of me flexing im actually stuck, the open diffs sucked in the sand.

And funny you mentioned using 4x4 on the pavement, that's exactly how i broke the old auto hubs the first day i got the truck running, never got around to replacing it until a few months back, now i know to never engage 4x4 on pavement, but on the dirt i drove around with just the hubs locked for the most part, and not until i needed 4x4 i would engage it
