More information would be nice. 2WD, 4WD, AWD? Auto trans? (I would assume it is an auto). "Is there such a thing" as what? The info you're seeking may be in your owner's manual.
Don, its a dealer installed option, I'm not sure exactly what it is possibly a reprogramming of the computer to allow the transfer case to shift into neutral. But yes it does exist.
Ok let me start over. I need my 2000 AWD brought from a near by town. Its 12 miles. Half of that will be rural highway at 55 mph. Does it need to be off the ground or can it be towed on a wheel lift? The tow companies around here wand twice as much for flat bed or dolly tow.
Yeah I think that would smoke the transfer case. Rear tires rippin 55mph and fronts turning zero. Like said pull the rear driveshaft. Unless someone else chimes in and says it's ok I agree with the above. Being an AWD vehicle all 4 wheels have to turn the same speed or bad things happen.
I've only heard of one automatic that was safe to tow by wheel lift, that's the old Fordamatic.
That's because the fluid pump is driven off the output shaft so the 'box gets lubricated.
Yes, the four wheel drive V-6 automatic trans can have the Ford neutral tow kit installed. I had it installed in my 1998. Back in 2005 it was less than forty dollars for the kit, and the dealer charged fifty dollars to flash the computer. Works well, and very easy to engage.
I have towed my 1998 Exolorer V-6 over 70,000 miles since I bought it with about 36,000 miles on it. It now had 188,000 miles on it. Four wheel drive with the same motor, same transmission, same transfer case. Towed at speeds over seventy mph consistently. If Ford did not want it flat towed they would not have sold, and installed, a kit to make it towable. The Expolorer has been a great toad! It is one of the cheapest ($$$) tow vehicles you can buy. Some Jeeps are great, easy, but are usually more expensive. I found the box the kit came in. The part number on the box is F77Z 7H332 AB. I hope this helps.
Gentlemen, remember, he has an AWD. The BW4404 transfer case does not give a rat's ass what programming is in the PCM and GEM. See post above from 1997XLTRollover. Either pull the rear driveshaft or flatbed it.
Hi I am very interested in this reply but cannot seem to open PDFs or get anymore info. I am also attempting to locate the NTK and or other option but in the end get an installation to flat tow. Pls advise if you can thnks BB
