Fn Ford problems and need help

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition and all the bells and whistles it could have, i have. Just one problem, I was going shopping one recent day, got to store just fine but when I left I put it in Drive and it began to go but stepping on the gas peddle wasn't doing any good. So it was going, but only about 5 mph, well imagine your vehicle in drive and letting it just "go" that is how i drove home 25 miles and a portion of that was on the freeway, ( i was prob the most hated driver on the road im sure). Anyway, if I put on the gas it sometimes killed the engine and I coasted to the side of the road started it back up, put it in drive and away i went (5 mph) and the motor sound like if you were to put some big rocks in a metal pot and shake it. yea i haven't a clue what it could be. Does anyone know or can tell me what they think about it? Surely would appreciate any feedback on this.

Welcome to this forum! The timing chain cassette goes after a while. The motor might have internal damage.

Yeah imagine the sound of a metal chain being dragged through something. If the noise is like that, the timing chain guides might be shot. Given that it still runs it might not have jumped time yet but it's a big job to fix if it's a 4.0 V6 since those have chains on both the front and rear IIRC.

If it still idles ok you might be able to get it fixed, if it jumps time the motor might be hosed.
