2000 xlt explorer v6 auto
this is about my experience with a xlt ford explorer 2000 build v6 4ltr auto as sold in australia. the vehicle was going into 4 wheel drive which was evident when going around rounabouts and trans making noises etc, also the cabin fan would not work correctly etc. there may have been other issues. i have been reading forums and there are a lot of electrical and trans probs quoted, i am a motor mechanic by trade and this had all the hallmarks of bad earths which it turned out to be. after many months of these intermittant faults i pulled out the radio and was checking earths behind the dash when i pushed the main wiring loom out of the way and everything started to work, by pulling and pushing the loom i could make things work or stop. i opened up the loom by cutting the insulation and found about 8 earth wires which were not fuse welded but just pushed together i joined these earth wires securely and have had no probs since, that was at approx 80000 kms, it has now done 190000 kms city driving and high speed towing. bad earths cause the current to earth back through other components such as the 4 wheel drive motor and engaging it causing mechanical damage to the gearbox and other components like computers etc. this may be the cause of reaccuring probs some people are having with transmissions. i have photos of this and sent a email to ford australia but they were not interested. hopeing this may help someone out there for whats it worth. it has been a great vehicle.
