Mine are getting looser and rattling now. Another 2017 Explorer in my work parking lot is missing one of their windshield panels.

Were these failing under warranty?

As few commented in that link, what's the ratio of original windshields to replacements?
Also, 0.0088% failure rate is quite low.

What about year/mileage at failure for the 164 reports?

The failure rate for these is WAY higher than 1 percent.

My buddy has a 14 and lost their entire trim piece going 80 down the highway.

I didnt lose my trim piece (yet) but I lost the seal while going 80 down the highway, other one is trying to go.

Have him report it to NHTSA if he can.

Clarification on my post, the 0.0088% is the rate of reports to NHTSA, so there's a chance that the actual failure rate is higher.

There’s not a chance, the failure rate would certainly have to be higher. The only way it could be less is if people were falsely reporting this.

Absolutely will!

Man, if it there were over 18K failures, I would expect this to be a bigger issue.

I agree, it's most likely higher, but at this point in time, according to that article, NHTSA has received (only) 164 reports in over 1.8M Explorer.

And to your point, if there were false reports, it could be lower. Or lets say instead of false reports, mistaken reports.
